The Root Causes of Addiction

Addiction is an insidious disease that can cause dependence on a substance or activity even if you know it can cause you harm. No one just picks up a bottle of alcohol or takes pills with the intention of becoming addicted.

Understanding the causes of addiction can be complicated. 4 C's of compulsion, craving, consequences, and control are unique to addiction. Risk factors can stem from experiencing trauma, mental health issues, or genetic makeup.

No one has to go through difficult times alone. Being there as a source of support for those suffering from addiction can be a turning point to help them deal with their struggles. SAMHSA's National Helpline provides a free, confidential 24/7, 365-day-a-year treatment referral and information service in English and Spanish for individuals and families facing mental and/or substance use disorders.
