2012-2013 UthMpact Leadership Class II Activities

2012-2013 UthMpact Leadership Class II Activities

Students from various Polk County high schools have been nominated by their school principals to participate in the UthMpact Leadership Class II for 2012-2013. This unique program spearheaded by InnerAct Alliance, StandUP Polk Coalition, UthMpact Coalition, and key business partners, is designed to help teens develope crucial leadership skills.

On October 24th, the UthMpact Class II participated in Human Services Leadership Day at Parker Street Ministries. The group of 32 UthMpact leaders from 16 different high schools in Polk County got down and dirty laying sod at Florida Baptist Children’s Home. After clean up, it was off to spend some quality time with elderly folks, and help out teachers and students by creating 100 make-and-take learning centers and activities including exercises in telling time, bead counting, and multiplication facts. Special thanks to Andrea Hagan and Amanda Schell for chairing this special day.

The new youth leaders will travel throughout the country once a month until April 2013 to participate in community service activities and meet with community leaders to discuss challenges faced in the community and suggest proactive solutions. Look for UthMpact showing their Christmas Spirit in the Lakeland Christmas Parade on December 6th!

Underage Drinking Remains a Serious Problem

Although there’s been some progress in reducing underage drinking among young people age 17 and younger, a new report issued last month by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) shows that the rates are still unacceptably high.

The study, which used combined data from SAMHSA’s 2008-2010 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), reported that 26.2 percent of 12-20 year olds surveyed admitted drinking in the month before the survey, and 8.7 percent said they purchased their own alcohol last time they drank.

“Underage drinking should not be a normal part of growing up. It’s serious and persistent public health problem that puts our young people and our communities in danger,” said SAMHSA Administrator Pamela S. Hyde. “Even though drinking is often glamorized, the truth is that underage drinking can lead to poor academic performance, sexual assault, injury, and even death.”

All 50 states and the District of Columbia currently have laws prohibiting the purchase and use of alcoholic beverages by anyone under age 21.

The NSDUH Report provides a very interesting state-by-state breakdown of drinking among 12-20 year olds. The highest rate of underage drinking in the past month was in Vermont (37.0 percent), and lowest in Utah (14.3 percent).

Vermont was also one of six states in the northeast among the top ten states with the highest rates of past month underage alcohol use, including Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Rhode Island. New York also had one of the highest rates (15.0 percent) of past month underage self-purchase of alcohol.

States with the lowest incidence of underage youth illegally purchasing their own alcohol included New Mexico (2.5 percent), Idaho (2.6 percent), and Oregon (2.6 percent).

Southern states had some of the lowest rates of underage drinking (Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia) and some of the highest rates of underage youth illegally purchasing their own alcohol (Alabama, Louisiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, and North Carolina).

This report shows how important it is that prevention of underage drinking and substance abuse remain in the forefront of our top strategic initiatives! To read the full survey and report, visit the SAMHSA website at: http://www.samhsa.gov/data/2k12/NSDUH111/SR111StateEstUnderageAlc2012.htm

Pre-Partying Increases Heavy Drinking & Has Serious Unintended Consequences

Getting together for a few drinks with friends before heading out on the town has become increasingly popular among young people. Pre-partying is a pretty common occurrence on most college campuses where teens drink before heading out to the main party or social event of the night. It’s estimated that nearly half of the drinking that takes place in a single night happens at pre-parties.

A new study conducted by Swiss researchers and published in the November 2012 journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, shows that young people who drink before they go out to another more formal setting, tend to drink twice as much, which doubles the odds of experiencing serious unintended consequences.

A researcher at Addiction Switzerland and corresponding author of the study, Florian Labhart, warns that pre-drinking is often the start of the problem for those who drink before they go out, “Pre-drinking is likely to lead people to cumulate two normal drinking occasions – one off-premise followed by one on-premise – and generally results in excessive alcohol consumption.”

For the study, scientists monitored the drinking habits of 183 young adults (97 women and 86 men), all about 23 years old, from three colleges or universities in Switzerland. They found that pre-drinkers tend to drink faster and consume more, which increases blood alcohol levels and leads to a greater risk of drinking related problems.

Results of the study showed that pre-drinking led to specific risky outcomes including:

• Hangovers: reported by 40 percent of men, 36 percent of women

• Blackouts: reported by 12 percent of men, 7 percent of women

• Unplanned substance use: reported by 21 percent of men, 12 percent of women

• Unintended or unprotected sex: reported by 8 percent of men, 5 percent of women

• Injury of self or others: reported by 6 percent of men, 3 percent of women

• Property damage: reported by 4 percent of men

Pre-drinking is also common among underage drinkers in the United States because of the higher legal drinking age. According to a report by the U.S. Department of Education, teens who pre-drink tend to drink more and in larger quantities before they go to a club or bar because they consider it a safe way to get buzzed in a familiar environment, the cost is lower, and because they cannot legally buy alcohol in those establishments.

Researchers recommend that partygoers become more conscious of their drinking habits, keep track of the number of drinks they’ve had, and avoid drinking games or chugging contests to help reduce the chances of serious negative outcomes. The findings of this and other studies on pre-partying point to the need for educational programs and developing prevention methods in the community and on college campuses to help reduce risky behavior of over-drinking.

It’s the Season for Holiday Parties...not for Underage Drinking!

It’s holiday time with families and friends gathering together to share delicious food, desserts, and toast in the New Year. Unfortunately for many people, alcohol consumption has become synonymous with holiday celebration – teens included.

Following the lead of influential adults, many young people are tempted, or even encouraged to celebrate with alcoholic drinks. According to “Students Against Drunk Driving” (SADD), a longstanding myth is that allowing teens to drink at home will make it less likely that they will drink elsewhere. In truth, more than half of high school teens who report their parents allow them to drink at home, even just to celebrate a special occasion, say they also drink with their friends. Data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration shows has shown that fifty-two percent of 15-year-olds say they either drink at home or at a friend’s house. However, only 31 percent of parents of 15/16-year-olds believe their child had a drink in the past year.

InnerAct Alliance and StandUP Polk, our partners in the Coalition for a Drug Free Polk, would like to wish you a safe and happy holiday, along with a reminder that it’s more important than ever to remain involved and communicate with your teen about the dangerous risk of alcohol and drugs use. Remember YOU are still the number one influence in your children’s lives. Let them know that even though adults may be drinking alcohol at holiday parties, under no circumstances are they allowed to drink. If your child is going to a holiday event, call ahead to make sure that the event will be alcohol and drug free. Keep the holiday season merry and bright by giving your children the gift of positive influence and communication!

Fall Prescription Drug Take Back Event Nets Over 755 lbs. of Pharmaceuticals

StandUP Polk, the Coalition for a Drug-Free Polk, and local law enforcement agencies were proud to participate in the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Fall event on Saturday, September 29, 2012, and host our community’s Purge Your Pills Rx Drop Off at various locations throughout Polk County for citizens to turn in unused, expired, or unwanted Human and Pet Medications for safe and proper disposal.

An estimated 755.26 pounds of recovered pharmaceuticals filling 39 bags were collected and safely disposed of via incineration. Drop-off sites included Auburndale Police Department, Haines City Police Department, Lake Alfred Police Department, Lake Wales Police Department, Lakeland Police Department, and Winter Haven Police Department, as well as Everest University’s Lakeland Campus.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. More than seven million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Each day, approximately, 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time, according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet. Previous prescription medication collections held in Polk County, FL have resulted in nearly 3,000 pounds of recovered pharmaceuticals.

Unwanted medications may be taken to Polk County’s new Permanent Drop Sites located at:

Auburndale Police Department – 2 Bobby Green Plaza, Auburndale, FL (weekdays, 8 am-5pm)

Haines City Police Department – 35400 Highway 27, Haines City, FL (24 hours/7 days)

Permanent Drop Sites for Prescription Drugs Now Available in Polk County

Unwanted, unused or expired prescription drugs present dangerous risks to our community when they fall into the wrong hands, and they may potentially damage our environment through improper disposal. Prescription drug take back events, sponsored by StandUP Polk Coalition for a Drug-Free Polk and local law enforcement agencies in Polk County, have resulted in collection and safe and proper disposal of 3,000 pounds of unwanted medication turned in by the public over the past two years.

The partnership is pleased to announce the establishment of 4 permanent secure collection drop-boxes at the following police department locations for citizens to turn in unwanted human and pet medication year-round:

Auburndale Police Department – 2 Bobby Green Plaza, Auburndale, FL (weekdays, 8 am-5pm)

Haines City Police Department – 35400 Highway 27, Haines City, FL (24 hours/7 days)

Lake Alfred Police Department – 190 North Seminole Avenue, Lake Alfred, FL (24 hours/7 days)

Winter Haven Police Department – 125 N. Lake Silver Dr. NW, Winter Haven, FL (weekdays, 8am – 6pm)

"Citizens can just come to any of these locations to drop off their prescription drugs anonymously,” said Lt. Keva Harris of Haines City Police Department, who serves as the Coalition’s law enforcement task force chairperson. “We appreciate the community's help in keeping dangerous medication off the street."

Medication must be deposited in a sealed container. No loose pills, liquid medication, or contraband will be collected at the permanent sites.

“With 1,300 pounds of medication collected at the Spring 2012 Pill Drop event, the need for secure sites to provide safe collection on more regular basis became even more apparent. We would like to thank the Community Foundation of Greater Lakeland for assisting with the purchase of these permanent drop boxes for Polk County,” said Angie Ellison, executive director of InnerAct Alliance, a partner in the StandUP Polk Coalition.

Our community’s first Fall Purge Your Pills Rx Drop Off will take place on Wednesday, September 12, 2012, from 10 am to 1 pm, at Everest University’s Lakeland Campus, located at 995 East Memorial Blvd., Suite 110. For info, call (863) 274-7008.

Then on Saturday, September 29, 2012, StandUP Polk and local law enforcement agencies will join the Drug Enforcement Administration for the national Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, from 10 am to 2 pm, for citizens to turn in unused or unwanted Human and Pet Medications for safe and proper disposal, at 6 locations in Polk County: Auburndale Police Dept. 2 Bobby Green Plaza, Auburndale; Haines City Police Dept. 35400 Highway 27, Haines City; Lake Alfred Police Dept. 190 North Seminole Avenue, Lake Alfred; Lake Wales Police Dept. 133 East Tillman Avenue, Lake Wales; Lakeland Police Dept. 219 N. InnerAct Alliance Awarded Drug Free Communities Continuation Grant to Prevent Youth Substance Abuse

InnerAct Alliance is the proud recipient of a Drug Free Communities Support Program (DFC) Continuation Grant awarded this month by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy in partnership with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The grant provides community coalitions needed support to facilitate citizen participation in local efforts to prevent and reduce youth substance abuse.
InnerAct Alliance, formerly the Drug Prevention Resource Center, has worked diligently since 1985 to reduce the abuse and underage use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs through: Community Awareness and Involvement; Prevention Education; Economic Support; and Leadership Development. The agency serves as the fiscal agent for the StandUP Polk (adult-based) and UthMpact (youth-based) Coalitions for a Drug-Free Polk to help educate about the dangers of substance abuse and bring about positive changes for Polk County.

To continue to be eligible for this grant funding, StandUP Polk and InnerAct Alliance have been tasked with working together on youth prevention initiatives for reducing prescription drug abuse and underage drinking with representation from 12 sectors of the community.

“Our efforts to keep youth substance-free are critical to creating and maintaining a healthy and safe community here in Polk County,” said Angie Ellison, executive director. “We are honored to have been awarded a DFC Continuation Grant to allow our Coalition and its partners to continue the important work that began with the initial grant in 2010, and remain focused on accomplishing our community’s long-term plan to reduce youth substance abuse!”

Some of the on-going successful coalition partnership projects supported by DFC grant funding over the past 2 years include the UthMpact Leadership Program (created in 2011); Annual Community Drug Summits (2010-2012); twice-yearly county-wide Purge Your Pills Rx Drop off events; increased capacity within both the StandUP Polk (adult) and UthMpact (youth) coalitions; increased collaboration between Hardee, Highlands, and Polk county coalition efforts that has resulted in the creation of an exciting new tri-county coalition slogo, and hiring of additional staff. The continuation grant will enable the Coalition partners to continue the important work that needs to be accomplished on our community’s long-term plan to reduce youth substance abuse.

Upcoming coalition events this fall include the 3rd Annual Drug Summit on September 27, 2012, from 8 am to 4 pm, at the Stuart Center on U.S. 17 in Bartow, and the DEA Purge Your Pills Rx Drop Off on September 29, 2012, from 10 am to 2 pm, at the Auburndale, Haines City, Lake Alfred, Lake Wales, Lakeland, and Winter Haven police department locations.

UthMpact Leadership Class II

Students from various Polk County high schools have been nominated by their school principals to participate in the UthMpact Leadership Class II for 2012-2013. This unique program, spearheaded by InnerAct Alliance, StandUP Polk Coalition, UthMpact Coalition, and key business partners, is designed to help teens develop crucial leadership skills.

On July 31 – August 1, 2012, a group of 35 teens representing 16 different Polk County high schools took part in a Leadership Retreat, held at the Mainsail Suites Hotel & Conference Center in Tampa, FL, to kick-off the program. The action packed agenda included DiSC personality tests and fun team building activities led by motivation expert, Patrick T. Grady, a former middle and high school educator, author of the book titled, “Who Packs the Parachute,” and co-author of “Teen Power Too” and “Teen Power and Beyond.” Recent graduates of the 2011-2012 UthMpact Leadership Class were also on hand to assist with leading group activities and presentations.

Once a month, beginning in September, these new youth leaders will travel throughout the county to experience the inner workings of local government, healthcare, education, and law enforcement. The group will meet with community leaders to discuss challenges faced in the community and suggest proactive solutions.

UthMpact is the dynamic coalition of teen leaders committed to helping educate and deliver key substance abuse prevention messages to teens by their peers. Coalition goals for UthMpact are to provide positive community engagement; change community stereotypes about teen drug use by volunteering, informing and being educated; set examples for other teens; increase coalition membership and involvement in youth clubs in high schools; and positively encourage alcohol and tobacco prevention and cessation.

StandUP Polk Coalition Supports FDA Safety and Innovation Act (Synthetic Drugs)

StandUP Polk, the Coalition for a Drug-Free Polk, InnerAct Alliance, and The Office of National Drug Control Policy commend Congress for passing the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act, S. 3187, which requires 26 synthetic chemicals, including those commonly found in products marketed as "K2" and "Spice" to be considered Schedule I substances. Schedule I substances are those with a high potential for abuse; have no medical use in treatment in the United States; and lack an accepted safety for use of the drug.

"I applaud Congress for coming together on this issue that is affecting so many of our young people. Research shows that parents are the most powerful force in the lives of young people,” said ONDCP Director Kerlikowske. "Synthetic drugs like 'bath salts,' Spice, and K2 are a serious threat to health and safety. I urge families to take time today to learn what these drugs are and discuss the harms that all drugs pose to young people in America."

As part of ongoing efforts to coordinate the Federal response to the drug threat, in February the ONDCP joined The Partnership at Drugfree.org to introduce a kit for parents and adult influencers housing the tools they need to talk with their teens about this emerging threat and recognize the warning signs of use. The information kit includes a slide-cast with facts about synthetic drugs, a corresponding podcast and video, and a printable guide so parents can present details on what to look for, what the street names are and what the effects of these substances are to others in their community. The kit is available on The Partnership at Drugfree.org website and is part of the "Parents360" community education program funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance.

StandUP Polk is the adult-based component of the Coalition for a Drug-Free Polk, a pro-active group committed to changing attitudes and beliefs about underage drinking, reducing social and retail access to alcohol, and advocating against abuse of marijuana and prescription drugs. Members of StandUP Polk include representatives from community and faith-based organizations, local law enforcement, medical profession, businesses, schools, parents and youth from all over Polk County. The Coalition operates through grant funding provided by the Drug Free Community Grant.

The community is welcome to attend regular meetings on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 10:00 A.M. at the Lakeland Flying Tigers Clubhouse at Tigertown in Lakeland, FL. UthMpact Business & Industry Leadership Day - March 28, 2012

The UthMpact Student Leaders participated in Business & Industry Leadership Day on March 28, 2012, and had an opportunity to visit six different businesses during a full and action-packed day.

On our first stop, we visited MidFlorida Credit Union, where Community Relations Coordinator, Jeanette Wallace, arranged for a behind the scenes tour of the branch for us and we learned about technology the bank uses to count and separate coins and check for counterfeit money.

After stops at Blue Sky Incubator and Cypher, we ate lunch at Publix training and office center and toured the dairy plant, where we were able to taste some of the delicious ice cream made there! Our next stop was a great tour at The Ledger newspaper, before moving on to WellDyne, where we observed the inner workings of the pharmacy and call center and saw robot machines that fill prescription bottles in about 12 seconds.

The day ended at the Central Florida Aerospace Academy at the Lakeland Airport, where we met with one of the flight instructors and toured the facility.

UthMpact Government Leadership Day – February 22, 2012

The student leaders in the 2011-2012 UthMpact program participated in Government Leadership Day on February 22, 2012 at Bartow County Courthouse. Four judges met with the group to discuss the important aspects of law and court workings. We also had the opportunity to visit the jail cells underneath the court house and the infamous tunnel.

Afterwards, we had a delicious pizza lunch, followed by a meeting with Drug Court and an interesting discussion about the various ways people try to fake a urine sample. The head of security showed us various weapons that were taken into the courthouse.

After our day at the courthouse, we discussed important matters with the Board of County Commissioners, and ended the day with a fun improvisation pretending we were commissioners hosting a PGTV television show.

UthMpact Education Leadership Day - January 25, 2012

On January 25, 2012, a group of 28 high school participants in the UthMpact Leadership Program had the unique opportunity to spend an informative day with key education personnel and representatives of local colleges and universities. The following summary of the day’s activities was written by participant, Tori Ellison, a senior at Lakeland High School:

We began the day at the Polk County School Board offices in Bartow where speakers from different departments met with us to provide a background of their particular jobs and how they affects us as students. One of the most interesting speakers was Hazel Sellers, who is not only a Polk School Board Member, but she also serves as secretary and board member of our parent agency, InnerAct Alliance. The UthMpact members enjoyed talking with her about various subjects, including school uniforms. Later, we toured the campus at Southeastern University and our group met with representatives from Polk State College, Southeastern University, Warner University, and Florida Southern College to discuss the course offerings at their respective schools and how they might correlate with our future educational plans. All of the students and faculty we met with were very welcoming and cast their school in a positive light. This was a very interesting day because the information directly affects us as high school students, about to enter college.

UthMpact Service Leadership Day - November 30, 2011

On November 30, 2011, a group of 30 high school student participants in the UthMpact Leadership Program had the unique opportunity to learn firsthand about the importance of service leadership and the positive impact of volunteerism in our community. The action-packed agenda for UthMpact Service Leadership Day included meeting with administrators, touring the facilities, and serving as volunteers at local nonprofit agencies including Lighthouse Ministries and Viste in Lakeland, along with a stop to visit with elderly residents at Hawthorne Inn.

The following summary of the day’s activities was written by participants Richard Anderson and Rachel Martin, students at Harrison School for the Visual and Performing Arts:

During our most recent Leadership Day, UthMpact members assisted at Lighthouse Ministries, made holiday greeting cards at Viste, and visited with the elderly residents at Hawthorne Inn. Lighthouse Ministries provided a guided tour and many hands on projects, including helping with the canned food drive and organizing donations. After a busy morning at Lighthouse, we had an opportunity to show our creative talents by making Holiday cards at Viste. It was very gratifying to know our heartwarming greeting cards will brighten the holidays for the sheltered elderly folks served by Viste programs. Then it was on to Hawthorne Inn, for a fun ending to a productive day. It was so enjoyable for all of us to talk with the elderly residents and hear their stories as they reminisced about their lives. Former Lakeland Assistant Police Chief, Debra Henson, also joined in the fun and brought along her very friendly golden retriever, Jake, who is also a licensed therapy dog…the residents loved him! The entire room joined in singing Christmas Carols, led by Richard and Eugene playing the piano. We will all remember Volunteer Day with fond memories and we look forwarding to sharing our experiences with future UthMpact members.

The UthMpact Leadership Program, spearheaded by InnerAct Alliance, StandUP Polk Coalition, UthMpact Coalition, and key business partners, is designed to help teens develop crucial leadership skills. The 30 student participants have been nominated by their high school principals. The teens will meet with community leaders and experience the inner workings of local government, healthcare, education, and law enforcement. Future theme days include: Education Leadership Day (January 25); Government Leadership Day (February 22); Business Leadership Day (March 28); and Leadership Graduation (April 25).
