More Info for Parents About Delta-8 aka Weed Light
Delta-8 has been in the headlines lately - adults may not know what it is, but unfortunately our kids do! As we learned in yesterday's post, statistics from the 2023 Monitoring the Future survey show that approximately 11% of 12th graders across the U.S. reported using Delta-8 THC in the past year.
Such stats highlight why it is important for parents to be aware of current drug trends and communicate with their children so they can establish themselves as a trusted source of information about substance use.
When people talk about marijuana, they’re likely referring to Delta-9 THC, the ingredient in marijuana responsible for the “high.” While both Delta-8 THC and Delta-9 THC are cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, Delta-8 is distinct from Delta-9 THC in both its chemical structure and effects.
Delta-8 THC is the lesser-known yet increasingly popular form of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a psychoactive substance found in the Cannabis sativa plant. It is often marketed as a “milder” version of THC and nicknamed “weed light” or “diet weed” because it isn’t quite as strong or potent. But that doesn't mean you can’t feel the effects. Some people report taking double the amount of Delta-8 to get the same high.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that Delta-8 THC products have not been evaluated or approved for safe use in any form. Since most delta-8 is not made directly from the marijuana plant, there are concerns about contamination because CBD is often synthesized with other potentially harmful chemicals not fit to consume. Users may be exposed to much higher levels of the substance than what naturally occurs in hemp cannabis raw extracts leading to adverse health effects and poisonings.
Another serious concern is that manufacturers often package and label delta-8 THC products in ways that appeal to children such as drinks, gummies, cookies, candy, vapes, blunts, and more. Products are sold online, as well as in convenience stores and gas stations where there may not be age limits on who can purchase them.
Poison control centers nationwide have reported a sharp increase in accidental exposure involving children and pets. The FDA is actively working with federal and state partners to further address these and other concerns related to delta-8 THC products that threaten public health and safety. Stay informed to keep our children safe!

Stay Active with Tips to Beat the Summer Heat
Here’s some hot tips to look and keep cool!π¦
Dress for the
weather – clothing can help you beat the summer
heat. Choose lightweight fabrics that wick moisture away from your skin. Don’t forget
a head coveringπ– a hat made from breathable material or a visor to keep the
sun off your face. Consider a portable battery-operated fan that attaches to
the brim of a hat/visor or can be hung around your neck.
Seek shade – summer is a great time to explore local parks. Many offer
shaded nature walks, bike paths, and trails that provide protection from the
hot sun. Morning and late evening are best times to avoid the heat of the day
and enjoy the outdoors.π΄
Scale back – when summer heat is at its highest, scale back on strenuous
activities or training. Opt for shorter bouts of outdoor exercise and strive
for consistency, not intensity.πͺ
Stay hydrated – keep your water bottle filled and sip as your work throughout the day. Aim for 8-12 ounces of fluids every 20 minutes when exercising. Add a little zing with a bit of lemon, lime, or other fruit juices to liven up the flavor. ππ
Remember to apply sunscreen and enjoy having fun staying active this summer!π

Happy 248th Birthday America!
Independence Day is celebrated each year on July 4. This year, America will celebrate its 248th birthday to commemorate our independence from Great Britain following the Revolutionary War. On this date in 1776, the Continental Congress approved the final wording of the Declaration of Independence for our country to become the United States of America!
Fireworks displays are usually the highlight of many Independence Day celebrations with colors lighting up the night sky across the United States.π According to the Farmers' Almanac, the origins of fireworks originally came from China - but the earliest forms of "firecrackers"𧨠came from a discovery almost 2,000 years ago when people would heat bamboo stalks until they blackened and exploded under the pressure of heated air inside them.
Fireworks have been part of the American tradition since the founding of our nation. John Adams envisioned great celebrations when he wrote a letter on July 3, 1776 - a day before the Continental Congress adopted the final draft of the Declaration of Independence - saying festivities should include "pomp and parade with shews (shows), games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations from one end of the continent to the other from this time forever more."
The first official fireworks displays began in 1777 with the first Fourth of July fireworks over Philadelphia's night sky...a tradition that continues with spectacular fireworks on every July 4 celebration.π
Wishing you & your family a safe and happy 4th of July celebration!
