Drug and Alcohol Facts Week – 5 Fast Facts About FENTANYL

National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week (NDAFW) is dedicated to educating parents and teens about the harmful effects of alcohol, nicotine, and other drugs (ATOD) use. Today's focus is on Fentanyl.

*Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that’s up to 50x stronger than heroin – 100x stronger than morphine

*Fentanyl mimics the body’s natural endorphins that block pain receptors to the brain

*Lethal dose of fentanyl is about 2mg - compared to about 30mg of heroin

*2 Types: pharmaceutical fentanyl (prescribed by doctors for severe pain) & illicitly manufactured fentanyl (not made by scientists, no quality control)

*Fentanyl can amplify potency + greatly increase overdose risk when mixed in powder or liquid with other drugs

*More than 150 people die every day from poisoning and overdoses related to synthetic opioids
