Happy Leap Day 2024!

This February is a little longer than usual - it's a leap year - and today, Thursday, February 29th - is Leap Day! 🐸

The calendar oddity means this year is actually 366 days long instead of the regular 365. Without Leap Day, our calendars would be out of sync with the seasons.📆

Let's celebrate the uniqueness of having an extra day to enjoy this month!

Thursday Thoughts: Don’t Let Stigma Be a Barrier to Seeking Help

Many different barriers can prevent people from seeking help to deal with substance use and addiction. But one in particular leads people to suffer in solitude - Stigma.

Substance use disorder has often been stigmatized. There is a common misconception that addiction is an individual's fault, rather than a disease. This can lead to personal shame and silence and make people less likely to seek help.

Don't let Stigma be a barrier to seeking help. Reach out to friends and loved ones who will be there for you no matter what. There's nothing to be ashamed of - help is always available. The Partnership to End Addiction offers FREE trained helpline support by phone, email, or text, as well as online support groups. If you or someone you know needs help, visit

Health Alert: Injectable Liquid Fentanyl

The fentanyl crisis continues to be a very real concern. Fentanyl misuse typically involves injecting or smoking illicitly-manufactured fentanyl (IMG) sold on the street as counterfeit tablets or powders. Experts warm about recent theft of injectable pharmaceutical fentanyl in liquid form from hospitals, clinics, and medical supply houses in Panama, the United States, and Europe. Injectable solutions have also been reported in Nigeria, Columbia, El Salvador, Argentina, Brazil, and Costa Rica - countries that do not currently have a major illicit opioid problem.

Illicitly-manufactured fentanyl liquid solutions pose similar lethal dosing dangers to counterfeit pills and powders. Drug traffickers often mix the solution with xylazine, cocaine, and other fentanyl compounds to sell more product and generate larger profits. When mixed, drug dosage rates can vary leading to higher overdose death rates and lethal outbreaks.

Officials are concerned that this could have severe implications for the introduction of fentanyl into drug markets in places that have not yet been exposed to illicit opioid use as well as worsen the existing fentanyl crisis in the United States.

Health Alert: Tianeptine or Gas Station Heroin

Health officials in the northeast warn about a growing drug threat called Tianeptine, available at gas station convenience stores and sold online, that is causing severe opioid-like effects and putting more kids and teens at risk as it spreads to other states.

Neptune’s Fix Elixir, ZaZa, Pegasus, and Tiana, known as “gas station heroin”, are products containing Tianeptine that affect brain chemicals and offer potential for abuse. This tricyclic antidepressant has not been approved by the FDA for medical use. Tianeptine interacts with opioid receptors in the brain and can mimic euphoria and effects of heroin. Tianeptine use can cause seizures, electrolyte abnormality, flu-symptoms, depression, anxiety, coma – even respiratory failure and death.

These products - sold in pills, powder, and in fruit-flavored drinks - are highly addictive. Because they are easily accessible, kids may mistake them as being safe. With so many substances readily available online or at local stores, parents are urged to talk to children about the risks. Tianeptine is not currently controlled under the Controlled Substances Act, but recently Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody filed an emergency rule categorizing tianeptine as a Schedule 1 substance.

Happy Monday Motivation!

Sometimes Mondays hit hard, but it helps to know you're not alone...we all seek Monday motivation😅 Let's power through the day together - You Got This! 💪

Stress, Anxiety, Depression = Risk Factors for Youth Substance Use

Substance use often begins during adolescence placing youth at risk for fatal overdose and substance use disorders in adulthood. To help prevent or reduce use among adolescents, it is important to first understand the motivations for alcohol, marijuana, and other drug use.

Findings from a new study published in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (2024) found that teens report seeking relief from stress, anxiety, and depression as top reasons for substance use. Finding proactive ways to reduce stress, learn healthy coping skills, and reach out for support can help improve mental health and lessen motivation for substance use.

Simple healthy lifestyle behaviors are a good place to start - children should engage in regular physical activity, eat a healthy breakfast and other nutritious foods, and get adequate, quality sleep.

Integrating substance use prevention with healthy behavior promotion can be a positive and cost-effective strategy for enhancing both physical and mental wellbeing of youth and adults.

Thursday Thoughts: Fentanyl – 2 mil can kill

Fentanyl, an extremely powerful synthetic opioid, is the #1 killer of those age 18-45 in the U.S. It is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. Just 2 milligrams of fentanyl - about the size of a few grains of sand or salt - is considered a lethal dose.

Illegal fentanyl is made by people who aren't scientists or chemists. There is no quality control, so the amount of fentanyl in an illegal drug or counterfeit prescription pill is inconsistent and may be fatal.

Even if you believe your child would never touch a drug of any kind, talk with them so they will know how to keep themselves safe.

Fentanyl 101 is a great resource

Educating Kids Safely in the Digital Age

InnerAct Alliance is proud to join with our prevention partners at Informed Families, a Florida-based nonprofit, to encourage parental education about substance use prevention and help kids grow up safe, healthy, and drug free. In today's digital age, it is important to foster a culture of responsible online behavior and we are happy to share 4 helpful tips to teach kids how to navigate the web with digital wisdom: 💻🧒

Make Clear & Consistent Rules - setting clear rules for digital use helps children understand expectations. Communicate and enforce these rules consistently. The goal is for children to take responsibility for their choices. Remind them that making good choices brings positive outcomes 👍while making bad choices brings negative consequences.👎

Accompany & Monitor Children - by being present and involved, parents can ensure children's safety and well-being online. Keep a watchful eye on the platforms they use, their interactions, and the content they engage with.👀By actively participating and monitoring, parents can guide kids to make responsible choices, protect them from potential risks, and address any concerns that may arise.

Communicate with Children - by keeping the lines of communication open, children will feel connected and comfortable discussing challenges they may encounter with their parents. This will also make them more receptive to your advice as you guide their development as responsible digital users. 💻

Teach Children to Be Tech Savvy - educate children about the potential risks and consequences of excessive technology use, such as social isolation and decreased productivity. Teach them to prioritize real-world interactions and activities over virtual ones.

By instilling mindfulness and self-control, you empower your child to make conscious choices that promote well-being and overall development.

Happy Presidents' Day - Monday, February 19th

The third Monday of February is designated as a celebration of Presidents' Day for Americans to reflect not only on our first U.S. president, George Washington, but also on our nation and its founding fathers, values, and traditions.

4 of our nation's chief executives were born in February - George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, William Henry Harrison, and Ronald Reagan - so this holiday has come to be celebrated in most states in honor of all U.S. Presidents past and present.

Legend has it that George Washington chopped down a cherry tree during his youth and when asked by his father, he said, "I cannot tell a lie. I did it with my hatchet."

Whether you believe this mythical tale is true or not, Happy Presidents' Day...why not celebrate with a nice slice of cherry pie🍒

Know Your Anxiety Triggers

Anxiety is a mental health condition that can cause feelings of worry, fear, or tension.😟For some, anxiety many also cause panic attacks and physical symptoms like chest pain.

Anxiety disorders are very common and it is estimated that nearly 40 million people in the U.S. are affected.

What triggers Anxiety? Causes can be complicated and it is likely that combination of factors, including genetics and environmental reasons, can play a role. Some events, emotions, or experiences may also cause symptoms of anxiety to begin or become worse.

It's important to discover what triggers your anxiety. Being aware of the cause can help you better manage it. So, next time you skip a meal or a workout, overdo sugar or caffeine, or decide to leave that chore until later, consider that it may have an adverse effect on your mental health.

Alcohol, Drugs & Your Brain: Why Risk It?

The human brain🧠 is the most complex organ in the body - it helps you breathe, eat a meal, drive a car, and enjoy everyday activities. Your brain not only controls basic body functions, it also helps interpret and respond to experiences, shape thoughts, emotions, and behavior.

Alcohol and drug use can alter important brain areas necessary for life functions. Substances also increase risky behaviors that can lead to addiction.💊🍺

Teens are most at risk because the brain continues to develop well into the mid-20s. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), teens who begin drinking before age 15 are 4x more likely to become addicted than those who start at age 21. And, those who use cannabis regularly score an average one grade-point lower than their peers and up to 8 IQ points may be lost before adulthood.

Why put your brain and your entire future at risk? ☠ Choose to take care of your brain during adolescence and your brain will take good care of you for the rest of your life!

Connect to the Present with a Valentine’s I-Spy!

Happy Valentine’s Day!💖Sometimes we all need a mid-week break to help us connect to the present. Thanks to our friends at @Positively Present for sharing a fun Valentine’s-themed I-Spy graphic to help us do just that!

Take a break at some point today and ground yourself in the present by searching for some of the following items pictured:

*The initial of the person you love
*Something you’d give as a gift
*A pencil and 2 paintbrushes
*Heart-shaped locks and keys
*A broken or cracked heart
*All of the conversation hearts
*Something you’d wear in winter
*Flowers that are pink or red
*All 4 of the four-leaf clovers
*The words “I love you”
*Something delicious to eat
*All the lips and lipsticks
*A heart-shaped musical note
*The words “I love me”

Taking a moment to look for these items requires you to use your sense of sight to connect in the present moment - something we all need to remember to do once in a while.

Hope you have fun and Happy Valentine's Day!🌹

Explore the Body’s Command Center: Alcohol & Your Brain

InnerAct Alliance is committed to prevention education to help delay onset of use of the gateway drugs of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana. We're happy to recommend factual resources to support youth and families and encourage you to look at some exciting new informational offerings from the National Institute on Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse (NIAAA):

NIAAA Website for TeensFacts About Teen Drinkingoffers research-based information on underage drinking. Alcohol misuse during the teen years may cause negative short and long-term effects as well as physical changes in the brain during development that could result in the reduced size and function of the frontal lobe (planning and decision-making), hippocampus (memory), amygdala (fear-sensing), and corpus callosum (communication). The earlier youth begin drinking alcohol, the more likely the negative impact may be.

NIAAA Virtual Reality (VR) module, Alcohol and Your Brainengages and educates young audiences about the harmful effects that alcohol misuse may have on their growing brain. Designed for Oculus Quest, Quest 2, or Mega Quest Pro headsets, this VR activity takes users on a virtual rollercoaster ride through the brain with stops to illustrate alcohol's harmful effects on the prefrontal cortex, nucleau accumbens, amygdala, hippocampus, and cerebellum.

YouTube Video version of Alcohol and Your Brain is available for Parents and Educators to share with middle school students on any computer or mobile device to spark conversation about harmful effects of alcohol and how to avoid substance use to keep their growing brains and bodies healthy.

The More You Know: Oral Nicotine Products

With increased regulations restricting sale of vaping products, another alternative to smoking has emerged to grab a growing share of the nicotine market – oral nicotine products

Popular oral nicotine products like ZYN, On!, VELO, Rogue, and Lucy are enticing young people with berry, citrus, and cinnamon flavors sold in bright, eye-catching packages that look just like candy.

Our friends at the Partnership to End Addiction shared the results of a survey conducted in fall of 2021, which found that 21% of youth reported using oral nicotine products in their lifetime: 12% used gum, 11% used pouches, 9% used lozenges, 8% used tablets, and 7% used toothpicks.

Available in many forms – lozenges, pouches, gum, and even toothpicks – these oral nicotine products can deliver high doses of nicotine disguised in appealing flavors. The use of candy-like packaging is concerning because kids may not recognize them as being unhealthy since they don’t look like traditional cigarettes or nicotine products. And, since there’s no smoke, vapor, or distinct smell associated with their use, they are a lot easier to hide from adults.

The Root Causes of Addiction

Addiction is an insidious disease that can cause dependence on a substance or activity even if you know it can cause you harm. No one just picks up a bottle of alcohol or takes pills with the intention of becoming addicted.

Understanding the causes of addiction can be complicated. 4 C's of compulsion, craving, consequences, and control are unique to addiction. Risk factors can stem from experiencing trauma, mental health issues, or genetic makeup.

No one has to go through difficult times alone. Being there as a source of support for those suffering from addiction can be a turning point to help them deal with their struggles. SAMHSA's National Helpline provides a free, confidential 24/7, 365-day-a-year treatment referral and information service in English and Spanish for individuals and families facing mental and/or substance use disorders.

Happy Feel Good Friday!

It's FRIDAY, the best day of the week! There is indeed a feeling about Fridays that you just don't get any other day.😀

According to Psychology Today, it's the power of anticipation that makes us happier on Fridays. Studies have found that one of the reasons is the autonomy that the weekend gives us - the freedom to chose how we use our time. This impacts overall wellbeing. Often it's a time we spend with family and friends for social support, which is one of the biggest protective factors for overall psychological health.

When people have something to look forward to, their mood tends to improve. And, this weekend we have the Super Bowl🏈as well as pre-Valentine's Day💖fun to look forward to. However you celebrate this weekend, we wish you continued feel good joy!

Thursday Thoughts: Be A Guiding Light for Your Children

Childhood is often pictured as happy-go-lucky and carefree, but like adults, children can also feel sad. When children are feeling down, it's important to know how to help them deal with emotions they may not yet know how to navigate.🧒

Let them know they're not alone - everyone feels sad sometimes. This validates their emotions and reassures them that sad times are part of life, just as much as happy times. It often helps to tell someone how they feel.

A great way to encourage children to share what is bothering them can be during playtime with play dough, sand, or water play. They can also draw 🖍 or paint a picture 🖌 to describe how they are feeling. These are tactile activities they can do while working out their feelings. Acting out through pretend play is another good way for children to make sense of what is happening in their lives. Practicing calming breaths or taking a walk or run🏃can also help release sadness and stress.

Take time to connect with your children and be a guiding light🌟so your child knows that they can come to you about anything - without fear of judgment or punishment.

Vaping Is Not Harmless

Vaping is NOT harmless! Research shows many teens and young adults don't realize that the flavors they use in vaping can contain nicotine, the addictive compound found in tobacco. 🚭

Many vapes also contain propylene glycol, glycerin, chemical flavorings, and other compounds with unknown health effects. As a result, those who vape - even just flavoring - may inhale and ingest potentially harmful chemicals. 🕱

Other vaping products can also cause harm. In 2020, thousands of people got sick and dozens died from an illness called EVALI - e-cigarette or vaping-use associated lung injury. Vitamin E acetate, an addictive in some THC-containing vaping products, is strongly linked to EVALI. When heated and inhaled, vitamin E acetate can damage the lungs. 🫁

The More You Know: Intentional Misuse of Over-the-Counter Medication

While prescription medication like opioids and stimulants capture most attention, another serious issue among young people is the intentional misuse of over-the-counter (OTC) medication. OTC meds are generally safe and effective but their ease of accessibility may feed teens' natural desire to experiment and lead to intentional misuse.

How does OTC Misuse Occur? - Young people may misuse OTC medications due to limited knowledge and lack of awareness. Oftentimes, OTC medications are readily available at home and young people may not be aware that they can be dangerous when taken at a higher dose or for nonmedical reasons. Unreliable sources such as peers and social media may also provide false information. It is important for teens to know that just like prescription medication, OTC meds can also be dangerous when not used as directed. Risky and intentional misuse can result in serious injury or death.

Social media can also tempt teens to intentionally misuse OTC medicine. Medications containing DPH or cough medicine containing DXM are often promoted as offering a "trip" or "high." Young people may misuse OTC products to self-medicate their sadness or boredom, or to seek social validation from peers or attention on social media. Additionally, misusing OTC meds may serve as a substitute for those who may be addicted to other substances but cannot obtain them

What can be done to Prevent OTC Misuse? - As a parent, YOU are one of the most influential forces in your child's life. You have the power to impact their decisions on whether or not to take medication. Model safe and proper dosing and other possible alternatives when it comes to taking pills for sickness or discomfort. Talk to your child and be sure to include OTC medication when discussing the dangers of drugs or alcohol. In research studies, teens report that knowledge of the serious consequences would make them reconsider engaging in dangerous online challenges related to OTC medication.

Always keep OTC medicine out of the reach of children and safely dispose of expired/unwanted medication. Monitor medication use when your child is ill. Be aware of signs that may signal misused OTC medicine such as: missing/empty medicine bottles, changes in your child's mood, appearance, sleep/eating patterns, or friend group, and loss of interest in favorite activities.

Helpful resources are available to help you learn how to prevent or address misuse of prescription or over-the-counter medications. Visit the Partnership to End Addiction at https://drugfree.org/

Which is More Habit-Forming - Smoking Cigarettes or Vaping Nicotine?

Nicotine in any form is highly addictive. Many who begin to use one form of nicotine transition to another form. 🚬

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) 2020 Monitoring the Future survey showed that the number of teens who say they vape nicotine has leveled off but still remains high. The # of teens who say they smoked cigarettes in the past month has declined significantly since the mid-1990s and is now at or near the lowest it ever has been.

At first, cigarette smoking was thought to be more harmful because the product is being burnt and smoke inhaled into the lungs. But, research shows very similar damage from heating up vaping solutions and inhaling that vapor into the lungs. It's been found that youth who vape are 6.8 times more likely to start smoking cigarettes within 18 months compared to youth who do not use e-cigarettes.

Nicotine is a habitual product - once a person starts using it via smoking or vaping, it can become very difficult to quit using. An even better strategy is never to start.🚭

Feel Good February To-Do List

When we are busy - and let's be honest, when are we not? - it's helpful to have a To-Do List ready to help organize and prioritize tasks that are most important to accomplish. ✍

When you accomplish tasks, it can be satisfying to check them off the list ✅We hope some tasks suggested by our friends @Positively Present will become part of your own personal self-care routine. Implementing small changes like affirming your truth, igniting new ideas, celebrating friendship, and preparing for change can help improve your overall mood and protect your mental health.

Having a personal To-Do List can make you better at your job and help you be a more balanced person. Like we always say, you can't take care of others if you don't take care of yourself first.💗

Happy Groundhog Day!

Happy Groundhog Day! Groundhog Day falls on the 2nd of February for a reason. It's the "cross quarter" day, meaning it falls at the midpoint between one season and another - between the winter solstice and the spring equinox - a good time to consider whether or not spring will arrive early.

According to Punxsutawney Phil, who did not see his shadow this morning, an Early Spring is on its way!🌻Of course living in Florida, that just means more of our glorious warm and sunny weather! 😎🌞

Thursday Thoughts: Be Like the Strong Oak

Welcome February! This month, we receive an extra day to find joy, so why not leap into the time with hope, strength, and calmness!

Today's Thursday Thought from Love to Know was chosen to remind us that "You are like a strong oak tree in a storm, so let the weather spin around you and persevere." 🌳

Calming yourself is an important form of self-care and can help it all feel way more manageable.😊

February is National Black History Month

Today begins #BlackHistoryMonth, the annual celebration of the contributions and achievements of Black Americans past and present.🌟

Why is Black History celebrated in February? – February is the birth month of two prominent figures who contributed to the freedom of enslaved African Americans. President Abraham Lincoln, born February 12, issued the Emancipation Proclamation which declared enslaved people free and linked slavery directly to the Civil War. February was also the birth month of Frederick Douglass who was born enslaved and later became a leader in the abolitionist movement.

Since 1976, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme. The 2024 Black History Month theme is "African Americans and the Arts" to honor the key influence that African Americans have had in the fields of performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary, and other forms of expression. 🎵🎨🎭

During Black History Month, let's deepen our commitment to freedom and equality as we continue to work to end racism in all its forms. ❤
