Be on Alert for Common Emoji Codes Signaling Potential Drug Use

🚨Parents: Be on the alert for common emoji codes
that can hide secret messages about drug use.

As part of their One Pill Can Kill awareness campaign, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has released a "cheat sheet" showing some of the most common emoji symbols pictured in the graphic above that may be used by teens to disguise drug-related communication and content.

The reference guide is intended to give parents, caregivers, educators, and other influencers a better sense of how emojis are being used in conjunction with illegal drugs. Fake prescription pills that are commonly laced with deadly fentanyl and methamphetamine are often sold on social media and e-commerce platforms - making them available to anyone who has a smartphone.

Sharing information like this helps to decode the emoji slang associated with buying and selling drugs. Please help spread awareness and keep our community safe!

Hit the Pause Button for Think-About-It Thursday

Self-reflection can be an important step in our quest to become the best version of ourselves. It enables us to move from just experiencing into understanding. It also encourages a level of self-awareness and consciousness which can guide us to being able to identify areas that are strengths as well as areas for improvement.

Reflection lends itself to emotional intelligence - the ability to understand and remain in control of our emotions. Many times, frustration, stress, and pain can be avoided if you simply reflect on your behaviors and thoughts. Having a defined process for thinking things through can be a useful skill for our own personal growth and wellbeing, as well as when working with others.

As the Greek philosopher Aristotle once said "Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom." Why not start with some of these simple self-reflection prompts from our friends at Positively Present that appear in the graphic above.

Prevent Impaired Driving: Talk with Your Kids

InnerAct Alliance joins with our prevention partners at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to remind parents that it's always the right time to talk with your kids about the dangers of impaired driving, especially with teens driving more often during the summer months. Communication is key to keeping your kids safe as well as those who they share the road with.

About 1-in-4 teen car crashes involve an impaired driver. The most effective way to stop impaired driving is to prevent it from ever happening. Before they hit the road with friends, talk with your kids and remind them to drive safely and steer clear of underage drinking and other substance use.

Some common situations you can use to reinforce expectations are: when your child asks to borrow the car - when you're at the dinner table together - when your child asks to ride with a friend to school or to a party - when you're running errands or in the car together.

Need ideas?πŸ’‘Get tips on how to talk to your teens about impaired driving with SAMHSA's "Impaired Driving: Talk with Your Kids" fact sheet -

Today is World Brain Day for Brain Health & Prevention

Today is World Brain Day - an annual event observed on July 22 aimed at promoting awareness and education for neurological disorders that affect individuals worldwide. World Brain Day 2024 is an initiative led by the World Federation of Neurology (WFN) to advocate for the importance of brain health and prevention measures.

The human brain is the most complex organ in the body - it controls basic body functions and shapes thoughts, emotions, and behavior. Prevention is key for brain health. It is important to exercise regularly (physical activity increases blood flow to the brain) - protect your head (wear a helmet & seat belts) - prioritize sleep (aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep) - stay hydrated (drink plenty of water) - prioritize mental wellbeing (self-care) - eat a balanced diet (fruit, veggies, whole grains, lean protein) - manage stress (practice relaxation) - stay socially connected (strong ties to family & friends) - and avoid tobacco and alcohol use.

Our brains are programmed to do things that feel good. Addictive drugs tap into our brain's reward system and flood it with dopamine, which causes the user to repeat behavior that triggers extreme pleasure to feel good in the moment. Over time, this effect wears off and so do other "feel good" activities - this may put users at greater risk of harm. With prolonged use, changes to other brain chemical systems occur and this can negatively affect your judgment, decision-making, memory, and ability to learn.

Once the brain adapts to drug use by developing tolerance, it begins to require more and more of a drug to feel the same result. This decreases the brain's ability to resist temptation and can affect the amount of pleasure a person receives from normal everyday activities like enjoying food, experiences, or relationships.

So, on this World Brain Day, make sure to take care of your brain so that your brain can take care of you. Choose not to try or use other drugs and educate yourself about why drugs are harmful. When you learn about what substance use can do to your brain and your body, it can help you make healthier decisions - knowledge saves lives!

More Info for Parents About Delta-8 aka Weed Light

Delta-8 has been in the headlines lately - adults may not know what it is, but unfortunately our kids do! As we learned in yesterday's post, statistics from the 2023 Monitoring the Future survey show that approximately 11% of 12th graders across the U.S. reported using Delta-8 THC in the past year.

Such stats highlight why it is important for parents to be aware of current drug trends and communicate with their children so they can establish themselves as a trusted source of information about substance use.

When people talk about marijuana, they’re likely referring to Delta-9 THC, the ingredient in marijuana responsible for the “high.” While both Delta-8 THC and Delta-9 THC are cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, Delta-8 is distinct from Delta-9 THC in both its chemical structure and effects.

Delta-8 THC is the lesser-known yet increasingly popular form of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a psychoactive substance found in the Cannabis sativa plant. It is often marketed as a “milder” version of THC and nicknamed “weed light” or “diet weed” because it isn’t quite as strong or potent. But that doesn't mean you can’t feel the effects. Some people report taking double the amount of Delta-8 to get the same high.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that Delta-8 THC products have not been evaluated or approved for safe use in any form. Since most delta-8 is not made directly from the marijuana plant, there are concerns about contamination because CBD is often synthesized with other potentially harmful chemicals not fit to consume. Users may be exposed to much higher levels of the substance than what naturally occurs in hemp cannabis raw extracts leading to adverse health effects and poisonings.

Another serious concern is that manufacturers often package and label delta-8 THC products in ways that appeal to children such as drinks, gummies, cookies, candy, vapes, blunts, and more. Products are sold online, as well as in convenience stores and gas stations where there may not be age limits on who can purchase them.

Poison control centers nationwide have reported a sharp increase in accidental exposure involving children and pets. The FDA is actively working with federal and state partners to further address these and other concerns related to delta-8 THC products that threaten public health and safety. Stay informed to keep our children safe!

In Today’s News: Crackdown on Copycat Food Products Containing Delta-8 THC

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) are cracking down on illegal sales of copycat food products that contain Delta-8 THC. Yesterday, the agencies issued warnings to 5 companies who produce Delta-8 edibles.⚠

The psychoactive substance is made from the same type of plant as marijuana and hemp. Regulators are concerned that the packaging used for these products may look similar to popular food and snack products. The FDA says this could lead to people overconsuming Delta-8.

Teens are particularly at risk if they are consuming edibles containing delta-8 THC since they often are new to drug use. They may not understand how long it may take to feel the effects, which can take 30-40 minutes. Teens may not know it takes that long so they may take another, then another - creating a risk of over-ingestion of cannabis. πŸ•±

For more information on delta-8 THC, be sure to scroll below to read our earlier post "Rise in Popularity of Delta-8 THC Among Teens in the U.S."

Rise in Popularity of Delta-8 THC Among Teens in the U.S.

Thanks to our prevention partners at the Partnership to End Addiction for sharing stats from the 2023 Monitoring the Future survey of teen behaviors that show more than 11% of 12th graders across the U.S. reported using Delta-8 THC in the past year. It is the first time that teens were asked about this drug in the survey. Data shows the percentage of teens using the drug is higher in the 19 states with no regulations around the compound and in states where marijuana has not been legalized.

Delta-8 THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is a naturally-occurring chemical compound found in traces in hemp and cannabis (marijuana) plants. In some states, users can legally buy gummies, vape cartridges, cookies, and capsules that contain a concentrated form of this compound online as well as at convenience stores and gas stations where there may not be age limits on who can purchase them.

Nearly all delta-8 products are made in labs with  cannabidiol (CBD) from hemp plants mixed with unknown chemicals making it much more potent than delta-8 found in nature. Because the FDA does not regulate the chemical process to make delta-8, products are not tested for safety and quality - so there's no way to be sure how much THC is actually in these products.🚫

Educate yourself and talk to your kids - be their trusted source on substance use. Do research together so your children can learn how and where to find factual information on important topics. Remind them that the best way to avoid substance use is not to start in the first place.

Share positive news that most Polk County students are making the right choices by choosing not to drink, smoke, or use substances - 84% of Polk Teens do not use Alcohol 87% do not use Marijuana - 96% do not use traditional Tobacco - 88% do not vape or use e-cigarettes. Knowing the truth can help kids avoid succumbing to peer pressure because they feel confident in making more informed personal decisions after knowing and considering all the facts!

Educate Yourself on Delta-8 THC

Update on Florida’s Efforts to Ban Tianeptine aka “Gas Station Heroin”

A law went into effect on July 1, 2024 making it a felony to buy, sell, or possess a drug called Tianeptine in Florida. Some call this substance "gas station heroin" because the highly addictive pills interact with opioid receptors in the brain that can mimic euphoria and effects of traditional heroin. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that tianeptine's dangers have been understated and it is known to be addictive and cause seizures, electrolyte abnormality, flu-like symptoms, depression, anxiety, coma - even respiratory failure and death.

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody has led the effort to outlaw gas station heroin saying, "Tianeptine, also known as gas station heroin, is highly addictive and even deadly. The federal government reports deaths nationwide and tianeptine has caused an increase in calls to Florida's Poison Control Center. We are taking immediate action to outlaw this dangerous substance in our state. No one should buy, sell, or use products containing tianeptine."

Tianeptine is listed among a growing class of potentially addictive products with a high potential for abuse. Although this drug is not approved for medical use in the U.S., it has been readily available for sale in many convenience stores, gas stations, and smoke shops. According to the FDA, tianeptine has been falsely marketed as an antidepressant to treat anxiety, depression, pain, and even opioid use disorder. Over the past decade, drug after drug have entered our country and been sold directly to consumers under the label of dietary supplements in an effort to bypass strict FDA regulations.

How is tianeptine getting into our country? One way is through other countries in which it is approved for use. It can also be synthesized here in America at 50-60% higher doses causing an increased number of overdoses. It is estimated that over 600 calls were made to poison control centers nationally from 2020 to 2022. Florida Poison Control reported having treated 65 patients for overdoses on these types of drugs since 2020.

InnerAct Alliance joins with our state and local officials in the effort to keep our community informed about emerging drug alerts like tianeptine.

Stay Active with Tips to Beat the Summer Heat

Don't let the summer's heat melt your motivation🌞 Summertime offers many opportunities to be active and enjoy warm weather and sunshine. Outdoor exercise is beneficial for your heart, muscles, and bones…and also healthy for your mind and spirit. Take extra care to stay hydrated since high temperatures can put extra strain on your body and heart causing you to sweat more and breathe heavier.

Here’s some hot tips to look and keep cool!πŸ’¦

Dress for the weather – clothing can help you beat the summer heat. Choose lightweight fabrics that wick moisture away from your skin. Don’t forget a head coveringπŸ‘’– a hat made from breathable material or a visor to keep the sun off your face. Consider a portable battery-operated fan that attaches to the brim of a hat/visor or can be hung around your neck.

Seek shade – summer is a great time to explore local parks. Many offer shaded nature walks, bike paths, and trails that provide protection from the hot sun. Morning and late evening are best times to avoid the heat of the day and enjoy the outdoors.🚴

Scale back – when summer heat is at its highest, scale back on strenuous activities or training. Opt for shorter bouts of outdoor exercise and strive for consistency, not intensity.πŸ’ͺ

Stay hydrated – keep your water bottle filled and sip as your work throughout the day. Aim for 8-12 ounces of fluids every 20 minutes when exercising. Add a little zing with a bit of lemon, lime, or other fruit juices to liven up the flavor. πŸ‹πŸ‰

Remember to apply sunscreen and enjoy having fun staying active this summer!😎

Happy 248th Birthday America!

Independence Day is celebrated each year on July 4. This year, America will celebrate its 248th birthday to commemorate our independence from Great Britain following the Revolutionary War. On this date in 1776, the Continental Congress approved the final wording of the Declaration of Independence for our country to become the United States of America!

Fireworks displays are usually the highlight of many Independence Day celebrations with colors lighting up the night sky across the United States.πŸŽ† According to the Farmers' Almanac, the origins of fireworks originally came from China - but the earliest forms of "firecrackers"🧨 came from a discovery almost 2,000 years ago when people would heat bamboo stalks until they blackened and exploded under the pressure of heated air inside them.

Fireworks have been part of the American tradition since the founding of our nation. John Adams envisioned great celebrations when he wrote a letter on July 3, 1776 - a day before the Continental Congress adopted the final draft of the Declaration of Independence - saying festivities should include "pomp and parade with shews (shows), games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations from one end of the continent to the other from this time forever more."

The first official fireworks displays began in 1777 with the first Fourth of July fireworks over Philadelphia's night sky...a tradition that continues with spectacular fireworks on every July 4 celebration.πŸŽ‡

Wishing you & your family a safe and happy 4th of July celebration!

YOU Make a Difference Every Day in the Life of Children

InnerAct Alliance joins our prevention partners at Informed Families and SAMHSA during National Make A Difference to Children Month to encourage parents, caregivers, and influential adults to make a difference and do your best to be drug-free role models to empower kids to reach for the stars!🌟

With substances becoming increasingly dangerous, appealing, addictive, and easier to conceal, taking time to talk about alcohol and drugs with our kids is more important than ever. Research tells us that having two-way family conversations about the risks of substance use and clearly communicating family expectations discouraging use can greatly reduce the likelihood of our kids experimenting with drugs and alcohol.πŸš«πŸ’Š

As caring adults, we want to be their most trusted source of information, guidance, and support on these complicated topics.πŸ‘ͺ
