In The News: E-Cigarette Sales on the Rise as Teen Vaping Drops

E-cigarettes have become more popular among adults in the U.S., according to a new report from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) released last week. FTC findings show more people across the country are smoking e-cigarettes than ever before. E-cigarette sales from nine leading U.S. manufacturers jumped by about $370 million between 2020-2021.

As sales are on the rise, government data shows vaping among teenagers dropped more than 60% last year compared to 2019. The industry says this is due to efforts to keep vaping products away from teens. A spokesperson from American Vapor Manufacturers, Allison Boughner, said, “We are trying to do the right thing because we are trying to show the FDA that we are not part of the problem, we are only part of the solution for adults. We don’t want kids using these products and increasing the age to 21 helped with that a lot.” Some measures in place include enforcing current laws, checking IDs, and requiring a signature for product delivery.

Even with reports that fewer teens are using e-cigs, CDC data shows it is still the most used tobacco product among middle and high school students. Health experts remind us that most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is especially harmful to young people. Nicotine affects how teen brains develop and can cause other cognitive problems.

Additionally, the CDC states that e-cigarettes are not safe for youth, young adults, pregnant women, or adults who do not currently use tobacco products. More research is still needed to understand long-term health effects and determine whether e-cigarettes are actually effective to help adults quit traditional smoking.
