Nitazenes Have Entered the Drug Scene: 40 Times More Potent Than Fentanyl

While most talk centers around the powerful synthetic opioid fentanyl, even more harmful opioids have entered the drug scene called Nitazenes – believed to be over 40 times more potent than fentanyl and with no approved medical use.

Nitazenes are a class of synthetic opioids, also known as the benzimidazole opioids, which are being detected with increasing frequency in street drugs and overdoses. Two nitazenes most often linked to overdose include metonitazene and isotonitazene. Nitazenes in white or brown/yellow powder form can be found in illegally-purchased pills, heroin, and other opioids. It can also be injected or ingested through smoking or snorting.

Same as with fentanyl, people are likely consuming these substances without knowing they contain nitazenes. Counterfeit pills are made to look just like real prescription medications, so someone may think they are getting one kind of pill when in reality they may get one laced with powerful nitazenes or fentanyl.
