Synthetic “marijuana” is
a man-made substance similar to THC. Known as fake weed and spice
among other slang terms, K2 is a mix of herbs, spices, and shredded
plant material typically sprayed with synthetic compounds known as cannabinoids
– a chemical similar to the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana (THC).
Synthetics are sold in convenience stores and marketed online as "herbal incense" or "potpourri". Packaged in small silver, gold, or colorful foil bags without any information about health and safety risks, these products are being abused for their psychoactive properties.
Youth may incorrectly assume that synthetics are less harmful to smoke or vape. In reality, use of synthetic cannabinoids can be extremely risky due to potential for unpredictable effects such as extreme anxiety, paranoia, vivid hallucinations, rapid heart rate, vomiting, violent behavior, and suicidal thoughts.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), along with federal and state governments, are taking steps to ban synthetic drugs including synthetic cannabinoids. With so many harmful products readily accessible in today's drug market, it is important for teens to be informed and understand the risks of substance use. Their lives may depend on it.
